Decommissioning of UCSD External Web Proxy

Status: resolved

Incident report: UC San Diego decommissioned its Web Proxy server July 13, 2017 at 7 AM. Web Proxy is used to access the university’s online resources from off-campus. This will affect those currently using the Proxy to access UC San Diego e-journals, e-books, databases, and electronic reserve materials.

There are several reasons UC San Diego is making this change. The current Web Proxy service does not transmit network credentials securely and there are better services that provide access from off-campus. Additionally, the infrastructure for the Web Proxy service has become obsolete and doesn’t provide the overall level of security required.

This change will not affect your on-campus access.

To continue accessing these resources from off-campus, you will have to connect through the UC San Diego Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Online resources for setting up VPN can be found by doing a search for "VPN" on Blink. For assistance with VPN connection, or if you believe you need an alternate connection solution, contact your local IT support team or the Information Technology Service Desk at servicedesk@ucsd.edu or (858) 246-4357 or 6-HELP.

If you are do not have access to VPN and need to access Library resources, contact Library Support at http://library.ucsd.edu/ask-us/support/index.html for information about resource access options.
